The work of Ute Meyer captures the bond between texture and atmosphere, a real strength in her portfolio. My favourite artwork, ‘Am Strand /Spülsaum’, highlights her exactness to detail, focusing on the foam that is at the coast, reminding one of the delicate nature of the seaside. The combination of low, natural colours with these gentle light and dark shadows helps to create a pleasant and yet restless picture that makes one think of nature and its soft but immutable power. The brushstrokes create the modules, bringing a 3D quality to the surface of the work. The artist makes use of those soft, adequate strokes to depict a palpable image. This method emphasises her proficiency without distracting the viewer from the core of the piece and bestows it with an aura of sombreness.

View over the water/ Ærø 3/2011 Oil on canvas 130 x90cm

At the end of one corridor, a ‘View of the Water’ captivates us. The painting was created this year on the Danish island of Ærø. Almost bare trees still obscure the view at the sea, which is further restricted by two hills. I feel a real pull from this picture – I want to go through the trees, through the narrowness to the vastness and infinity of the blue water, to the open, unobstructed horizon.

West Mill Loch of Hamar I Shetland 7/2005 oil on canvas 40×40 cm

I chose this painting because it conveys such a vastness in this small format that I had the impression of getting a panoramic view of this place. It is the sky, so familiar to me from Scandinavia, the colors that on the one hand give me the feeling of “I know” and on the other hand make me curious about the design. As small as this picture is, I still discover something new and different today – especially when the external lighting conditions change. It is still a pleasure to have it in my study – the eye can rest there when I look up from my PC.

Dense daffodils and perennial forget-me-nots 26/4/2011 oil on canvas

“Whoever has two loaves of bread, sell one and buy daffodil flowers for it, for bread is food only for the body, but the daffodil nourishes the soul”. – This wonderful statement is attributed to Mohammed! The daffodil was one of the few flowers that was planted in ancient times simply because of its beauty and not because of its suitability for medicinal or other purposes. The fact that the poet’s daffodil is one of my favorite flowers – food for the soul – certainly plays a decisive role for me. And so that I can see them in the garden and enjoy them for more than just a few weeks in spring, I brought this beautiful picture into our conservatory.

There are lighter areas of color in this black field, as well as at the top and bottom of the picture. All-over painting plus center. When I look at this painting, I breathe and feel a fresh breeze and smell the salty air of the north. The sea, the sky and the coasts merge into a unity of possibilities that nature has to offer. The expanse of the view in the picture creates a space of boundaries and infinity at the same time, which I like to feel, lose myself in and work my way out of. It is precisely the rocky coast that reminds me of my shaky existence on the one hand, but also promises me solid ground for the course of my life on the other, producing the sound of the living sea. Having just escaped from the entanglements of the reeds, I can all too quickly become entangled in many different nets in the sea before the promise of the distant shore prevents my as yet unfulfilled hopes from drying up.
